Zinc oxide is an inorganic compound which is a white powdered substance that is insoluble in both water and alcohol, but can be dissolved in most acids (including hydrochloric acid). Another interesting property of this inorganic compound is that it absorbs ultraviolet light. In addition, zinc oxide has adhesion, luminescence, high thermal conductivity and antibacterial properties. The chemical formula of zinc oxide is ZnO.

In modern society, zinc oxide has many uses. Coastal Zinc Group is one of the main producers of indirect process of zinc oxide in China.

Industrial applications

One of the main industrial uses of zinc oxide is in rubber production. It is used to activate vulcanisation and improve the strength and elasticity of rubber. Zinc oxide is also used in the production of concrete, as it helps to improve the water resistance of concrete and improves the processing time required.

Another important use for this inorganic compound is as a cigarette filter. It removes a number of toxic compounds without affecting the taste of tobacco.

Apart from these, some other notable uses of zinc oxide include the production of paints, anti-corrosive coatings, lubricants, adhesives, batteries, flame retardants, sealants, plastics, ceramics, cement and glass manufacturing.

Medical uses

As mentioned earlier, zinc oxide has antibacterial properties and is therefore widely used in the treatment of various skin conditions. It is used as a topical ointment to help relieve skin irritations, nappy rash, minor burns, dry and chapped skin. Due to its medicinal properties, it is also added to baby powder, anti-dandruff shampoos, anti-bacterial ointments and surgical tape. In addition to iron oxide, it is also used in the production of stovepipe lotion.

In addition to this, it is a source of mineral nutrition, with zinc being biochemically essential for many of the body's functions. Zinc oxide is also added to foods or vitamin supplements as a source of zinc.

Cosmetic industry

Zinc oxide is used as a filler and colouring agent. In over-the-counter products, it is used as a skin protector and sunscreen. Zinc oxide acts as a sunscreen by reflecting and scattering ultraviolet radiation.

Zinc oxide absorbs UV rays from the sun and therefore protects against sunburn and other damage caused by UV rays. As one of the most widespread absorbers of UV radiation, zinc oxide has been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for use in the production of sunscreens. It is also used in the production of mineral cosmetics, deodorants and soaps, among others.

How to store

Storage methods may vary depending on the brand, so check the correct storage method on the packet or ask your pharmacist. It should be kept out of direct sunlight and should not be kept in a humid environment, such as a bathroom or refrigerator. For safety reasons, it should be kept out of the reach of children or pets.

If the medicine has expired or is no longer in use, it should be disposed of in the correct manner. It should not be flushed down the toilet or drain unless instructions permit. If in doubt, consult your pharmacist to dispose of the medicine in a safe manner.

Note

These are some of the most noteworthy uses of zinc oxide. However, use zinc oxide with caution and it is not usually recommended to use this medication on severe burns and wounds. It is also important not to put zinc oxide in the mouth or eyes. Another thing to be aware of is that although zinc oxide itself is not toxic, there is a high risk of exhaling its odour.
